Great story, been wondering about the details since it happened.

Regarding NBA, another story I’ve been wondering about is if anyone ever took over Pete Newell’s role in running Big Man Basketball camps after he passed.

The story is that big men aren’t as valuable in today’s NBA, but I also wonder if his passing left a void of training that big men used to get, and is the reason for the decline in recent years.

Because there are many big men, like Giannis, who is clearly great, or Jokic or Doncic, all great big man players, so it seems more to me that there might simply be less big men who play well, and maybe because of lack of training like what Newell used to do for free (and the practice that provided, as well).

Or maybe you can write up his history of running these camps. I suspect that nobody ever did run a camp after him, and if they did, charge money.

Though one would think one of these millionaire players he trained would feel a debt to Newell for developing them, and run a free camp in his honor.

The facts need to be right for a story to really have credibility. Although you've got the basics correct, the name of the St. Louis team was the Spirits of St. Louis, paying homage to the name of Charles Lindbergh's plane. They were not and never were the St. Louis Spirits. And the ABA was never "extremely popular with fans" in most markets (hence the fluid movement of franchises from city to city or the folding of teams at any given moment.) The four teams that entered the NBA had solid fan bases, and were respected enough to actually inflate the crowd in other cities when they went on the road. I saw every home game the Spirits played in their two-year run. On a Saturday versus the Nets, they might have 9,000 in the St. Louis Arena. On a Tuesday night versus Virginia, they'd probably have 1,500.

I've known this story for a long time but that's because the Cougars were my team from 1969-74 when they left for St. Louis. To be honest, they are still my favorite team. Another factoid from the Spirits of St. Louis (the actual name) was their rookie radio play-by-play man: Bob Costas. Back to the Cougars, you should look into how they became the first professional team to play regionally with games in Greensboro, Charlotte, and Raleigh, an idea first proposed by Frank DeFord.
